In 2011, SMP Montage fitted a 1.1 MWp photovoltaic roof installation at Alpincenter Bottrop before repeating the feat a year later for sister company Alpincenter Wittenburg. Now, the Kiel-based specialists for large-scale and exceptionally complex solar projects have started work on a further indoor snow centre. In conjunction with project development partner Dr. Metje Consulting as the EPC contractor, SMP Montage is handling the energy-related refurbishment of SnowWorld in the Dutch town of Landgraaf and fitting an installation with a nominal output of 1.9 MWp. The installation will comprise tailor-made Iso-Top mounts by Schletter and 18,500 multi-crystalline PV panels from Trina Solar.
With a total slope length of 1.5 km, SnowWorld is Europe’s largest indoor skiing centre and is home to the world’s only indoor FIS race course. Following an eight-week construction phase, the new installation is due to go operational at the end of July.
“Alpincenter Bottrop is the world’s longest indoor skiing centre compared to Europe’s largest indoor winter sports centre of SnowWorld. Our experience gained from the van der Valk Group Alpincenter resorts will assist us in handling the Landgraaf project,” points out Manfred Fischer, Director of Sales and Marketing at SMP. “When it comes to roof installations on this scale, there are always some similarities in terms of the basic requirements.”
Nevertheless, the project is a challenge for the Kiel-based company. “The centre has a steel frame and an industrial foil roof. The first step is to open up the roofing membrane and remove part of the insulation so that we can see through to the slope,” explains Fischer. “Only then can we get started with installing the actual mounting system.” SMP Montage has sent a team of 25 construction specialists to Landgraaf.
Besides generating electricity, a PV installation on the roof of a winter sports centre has to perform a host of other functions. It insulates the huge roof space, thus boosting the cooling capacity of the building, and helps to reduce day-to-day energy consumption.
SMP Montage was recently cited as one of Europe’s fastest-growing firms. In April 2017, the Financial Times – working in conjunction with the website Statista – identified 1,000 European companies with the strongest percentage growth between 2012 and 2015. SMP Montage boosted turnover by 284 per cent, putting it in 20th place in the “Energy” category and 405th place in the overall rankings.
About SMP Montage:
SMP Solar Montage und Planungsgesellschaft, or SMP Montage for short, is a specialist engineering service provider for the global solar industry.
Since 2008, the German company with head offices in Kiel and Hamburg has been supplying the full range of construction services for large-scale PV projects of 100 kW and more – from site preparation and site set-up to excavation and civil engineering, from mechanical construction and
frame assembly to electrical installation and cabling of solar modules to site management and construction logistics. The assembly process for maximum area utilisation in standalone PV parks, which has now been adopted as standard across the industry, was co-developed by SMP co- founder and technical director Marc-Bernd Schipper in 2007.
For the Dutch van der Valk Group, SMP Montage has built complex roof-mounted photovoltaic systems for their Alpincenter indoor skiing facilities in Wittenburg, Mecklenburg Western Pomerania, and Bottrop, Northrine Westphalia. At 640 m, the latter houses the longest indoor ski slope in the world.
SMP has been a long-standing realisation and innovation partner for leading European EPC service providers such as Solarcentury, ibvogt, and Conergy. In the summer of 2016, the total nominal output of projects completed by SMP was over 800 MWp.
